TUAH, SMART's first tunnel boring machine, having completed the first phase of tunneling, has achieved an important milestone.

Tuah broke through at the North Junction Box in Jalan Cochrane on 11 December 04 marking the end of the first 734m drive. The event is often viewed as a memorable occasion by those in the tunneling industry as it marks the successful journey of the machine.

The North Junction Box is a term which refers to the point where the stormwater tunnel and the motorway converge/ diverge.

The machine will commence the journey through the second drive one month from now with a distance of 4.493KM to be covered.

The overall construction progress for SMART (as of 30 November 2004) is 37%.

The project's unique feature lies in its design which incorporates a stormwater channel and a motorway passage into a single tunnel with an external diameter of 13.2m.

SMART is a government project being jointly supervised by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia and the Malaysian Highway Authority.
