The Magnificent Gemilang...
THE second tunnel boring machine Gemilang has started
boring towards the south of the tunnel alignment.
The name GEMILANG was selected by the panel of judges
based on justification given by the TBM naming competition
participants. The name suggests that the TBM is one
which is splendid in terms of performance, magnificent
in appearance and excellent in quality. These aptly
describe the tunnel boring machine which will be carrying
out 96% of the tunneling activity. Incidentally, the
machine GEMILANG, will start boring activity towards
the end of this month, coinciding with National Day
Celebrations. With the Jalur Gemilang decorating the
Nation to mark this very important occasion, SMART's
very own GEMILANG will begin boring with all the might.
The machine replaces conventional tunneling technologies
with advanced excavation method that mitigates the
risks associated with drill and blast excavation.

Meanwhile, Tuah has covered some distance into the
tunnel and is moving on steadily.
This picture shows the back-up gantry of Tuah, the
first TBM. Tuah is well into the tunnel, burrowing
ferociously towards the north.
